Name: Quentin Beck
Door: Door Pass (Submissive)

Canon: Marvel comics
Canon Point: The Amazing Mary Jane Vol 1, Issue 5 (2020)

Age: 50-ish
Appearance: Regular | Costumed

History: There's a lot - cw for criminal activity, child endangerment and neglect, suicide, murder, madness, kidnapping, robberies, scams, demons both real and imagined.
Sidenote that due to his long and extensive history (60+ years of comics) and Marvel's fast and loose timelines some backstory and more have been given multiple storylines over the years so there are occasional contradictions across different comics.

Personality:
Positive Trait:
CREATIVE

Beck had started off as a special effects artist, given his love for classic monster movies and wanting to emulate them. He'd even managed some success at it with innovative creations until an accident blacklisted him. For many of his later criminal enterprises he'd concocted creative plans involving quite elaborate schemes. An early example was when he was masquerading as Spider-Man to discredit the hero - to the point of imitating the superhero's special powers of web slinging and wall crawling with specially made equipment and effects. He's used props and forced perspectives to convince Spider-Man that Mysterio was a giant and holograms giving the illusion that his helmeted head could detach or robots to create multiple Mysterios.

When an alternate version of himself convinced Wolverine to kill all of the other X-Men with tricks, chemicals and illusions meant to fool the hero's special senses, this version of Mysterio had to deal with the fallout. The older Wolverine crossed dimensions to find and murder Mysterio as he had the capability to do the same in his world. Mysterio wanted no part of this but was approached by another evil group who did want him to commit this deed. He had to use his talents for manipulation, holograms and illusions to wriggle his way out of this situation, get away from the group and managed in the end to convince Wolverine that he had really killed Mysterio. But of course it was another trick and Beck lived on.

On a more positive note, he's more recently used these talents to write, direct, star and do the special effects for his own biopic. Ironically with the help of Spider-Man's girlfriend Mary Jane.

He can come up with outrageous but effective schemes and he has the talents in various areas of special FX, chemistry, engineering, hard light holograms, robotics and other tech to be a powerful threat, despite him being only human with no supernatural or mutated powers himself.

Negative Trait 1:
MANIPULATIVE

There are many examples of him manipulating others including making Spider-Man think he was committing crimes by masquerading as the hero and making him think he's going insane by Spider-Man not recalling it or that Spider-Man's Aunt May had passed away while posing as the director of a retirement home. Then there are his multiple illusions that constantly fooled others in small ways like confidence scams and bigger schemes where he convinced people such as newspaper-man J Jonah Jameson that they were in an actual Hell. He has pretended to be a psychiatrist on numerous occasions, manipulating those he sees as 'patients'. He's even managed to turn the tables on his own psychiatrist, convincing him that he was the doctor and the doctor was the patient.

He's deceptive, untrustworthy and quite pathetic and desperate at times. He's been a failure for most of his life and that has weighed on him heavily through the years. He's attempted to retire and put aside his Mysterio persona a number of times but is always drawn back in, often because of his ego. More recently, he has been attempting to reform, distancing himself from his former criminal allies and forging a bond with Spider-Man's girlfriend Mary Jane. While he began with deception, he admitted to her who he was and they worked together (he writing and directing and she acting) to make a biopic about himself. He has a craving to leave a mark on the world and a legacy of notoriety if he can't have a decent one.

Even with his failures, he still has come close to taking down some powerful heroes just with his tricks and illusions and cleverness.

Negative Trait 2:
UNSTABLE

Beck can be a contradiction at times, being at once an over the top, egotistical showman who wants to be seen and recognized while also having a painfully shy childhood past and is at times socially awkward if he's not wearing the helmet that hides his face. He's been known to have depression and attempted to take his own life. At times he's actually exploited this by faking his own death numerous times. In his childhood he was emotionally damaged by his father who often called him worthless or actively ignored Quentin. His father took no interest in Quentin's hobbies in which the young boy wanted to make films and his father smashed the camera that was gifted from his uncle. This impacted him greatly, leading to a desperate need for attention and to prove himself. After failing a promising career in the film industry as a special effects artist and stuntman, he turned to crime.

Due to this terrible upbringing, he's formed a very unstable nature and he can veer between having some empathy - or at least trying to keep people unharmed during a robbery, devastated when someone is accidentally killed - to flat out attempting to drive people insane.

In some ways he's proud of what he's done but he quickly flips and also feels bad about it, wanting to make amends. There are a lot of feelings of inadequacy and insecurity underlying his grandiose performances and even he is self-aware of how broadly extreme his act can get. That doesn't stop him from continuing to grandstand with a typical villain monologue at times. He has been labelled as insane in the past and sent to an asylum.

Negative Trait 3:
SELF-SERVING

He may do criminals deeds for revenge or purely with the goal of gaining a bigger name for himself, one last attempt at a reputation to be noteworthy. He can be extremely petty and self-centered in this way yet at times he has cared when things go badly and even helped the heroes at times against his former villainous companions. Often the latter is for personal ends such as getting them off his own trail.

He showed the heroes how to take down Doc Ock when he got out of control, turning on his allies. When approached to kill the X-Men, he was reluctant and after being convinced by threats to agree and discovering that Wolverine from an alternate universe wanted him dead, he ends up seeking out other heroes for help and again turning on the bad group he was aiding. The tipping point was of course self preservation and he'll go with whichever side puts him at an advantage and suits his immediate needs.

Powers and Abilities:
Beck is a regular human but he is highly skilled in engineering, robotics, computers/hacking, chemistry, special effects and stuntwork. He can handle firearms, explosives and knows basic hand to hand combat. He's also studied psychology and hypnotism and incorporated these in his criminal enterprises.

Inventory:
1. His biopic script.
2. A King Kong action figure
3. A photograph of his father

He'll be wearing his Mysterio costume. Any fancy gadgets or effects he'll have to create and source within the city, if he manages to get any access to such things.
