[ work is easy.

following directions, making sure everything is in place. dolph may not be a media presence anymore, but eden was a media conglomerate. though, it was all the conglomerates packaged into one company, its tendrils everywhere. still, image was everything, so he understood how it all worked.

eventually, he takes his break, drinking a beer quietly to the side, his one eye watching the movement of people cautiously. ]

Everything alright over here? We can begin the next set-up.

[The director, Beck, approaches Dolph. It had been difficult adjusting and working around Chris' disappearance for some scenes but he was determined to get as much done as he could in hopes that he could fit Chris back in later. Still hoping that he would return. In the meantime, he was taking his film work seriously.]

[laserhawk]

Everything's fine.

[ it's easy work. so far, no trauma buttons hit. it's not like rayman is coming through the door. he takes another sip of his beer. ]

Just tell me what to do.

[makeanentrance]

No hurry. You're on your break.

[So he's down for a small chat first.]

[laserhawk]

[ dolph hums, nodding. ]

What made you pick film?

[makeanentrance]

What do you mean? The format or working in the industry?

[laserhawk]

Both, I guess.

Can't really have one without the other.

[makeanentrance]

The technology is a bit different here and we're going more digital but... as for why I started in the industry...

I loved films as a kid. Not only were they incredible: seeing monsters and beautiful damsels in distress on the screen, but they were also ... an escape. A safe place to be. The cinema was a much better place than being at home.

And I wanted to learn how they made all the amazing creatures and effects. King Kong. That was my favourite.

[laserhawk]

[ hm. that makes sense. without the cloying propaganda of eden, forced to watch whatever they provided, he can picture a more . . . magical experience. ]

In Eden, you could be fined for not watching a movie.

[makeanentrance]

What sort of movie?

[laserhawk]

Propaganda films, really. Stuff about Rayman, Eden, Holloway.

I have one too. It's called "Traitor".

[makeanentrance]

Sounds like an unpleasant place to be. Movies should be for enjoyment.

[laserhawk]

Everything in Eden was unpleasant. You had no freedom, no choice. Just the illusion of it.

This place is bad, but it'll never be as bad as Eden.

[makeanentrance]

Yeah, this place has surprisingly been mostly a positive experience for me, despite the... uh, initial kidnapping and being kept against our will, of course.

[laserhawk]

As long as it stays that way, I won't make a fuss.

[ yet. he still despises the system. ]

[makeanentrance]

It always could be worse, huh?

[laserhawk]

Yeah. And I know worse well enough.

[makeanentrance]

I'd love to claim it can only get better but I know how things tend to pan out, at least for me. So I have to enjoy it while I can.

[laserhawk]

It's a good way to look at things.

[ healthier too. dolph's not quite there, but he tries to keep it in mind. ]

You think so?

[He sounds surprised at that assessment.]

[laserhawk]

Yeah. I'm not that good at it myself.

But it's important. Not just in life, but to who you are.

[makeanentrance]

Take one day at a time and hold on to hope?

[laserhawk]

[ he nods. ]

One step at a time.

[makeanentrance]

And one film at a time.

We need to get this one done before... any more disasters.

[laserhawk]

We'll manage.

[ he shrugs. ]

You're playing a very important role here. A film's backbone is its crew.

News to me.

[ he's seen enough film crews to know they're not treated well. not that he cares. ]

Maybe I should have made that clearer when I hired you.

[laserhawk]

It's not like I asked.

And it's fine. I'll do the work.

I know what it's like to do so much of the work and get none of the credit. I worked behind the scenes for years before I was blacklisted.

I want to make sure that you're not only doing your job but that you're happy in doing your job.

[laserhawk]

That . . . seems like a lot.

[ and baffling too. ]

[makeanentrance]

It can be a rough industry.

So can being a criminal. I hired criminals for my crew back home so we could all have a chance to do something better with our lives.

Do you want that too?

[laserhawk]

[ for the first time since this conversation started, dolph looks vaguely uncertain. ]

Dunno. I'm not sure what I want.

[ what he wanted fell apart. he hasn't had time to construct a new future. have new dreams. he wanted to do this with someone. with alex.

now he can't and he has to pick himself up again. it's hard. ]

Well. One step at a time, yeah?

Do your job here and then the accolades will come.

[laserhawk]

You can keep that part.

I'm not interested in praise.

Then what is it you want?

[laserhawk]

I told you. I don't know yet.

[makeanentrance]

You like being useful?

[laserhawk]

I don't think so. Being useful seems too close to becoming used.

[makeanentrance]

You're not here to sabotage me, are you?

What? No. Why the fuck would I do that?

I'm just used to treachery.

[ besides, he's been betrayed so many times. ]

Never number one, huh? I've always been underappreciated too.

[He took that in the completely wrong direction.]

Always being thought of as second fiddle... As if I was never good enough to be the arch nemesis.

[laserhawk]

[ buddy. ]

Is that what kept you up at night?

[makeanentrance]

Sometimes.

In the past.

[laserhawk]

[ a low grunt. ]

I'm done with fame. Of any kind.

[ he's had both. the celebrity status and infamy. both equally sucked. ]

Right now I'd settle for respect.

[laserhawk]

And you think that'll happen if you're famous?

[makeanentrance]

No... Now I just want to bring something good to the world.

In this case, something entertaining.

[laserhawk]

Then your art will speak for you.

Don't get carried away.
